I type out a text to Delaney.

Me: Want to come over for a cookout?

I don’t have high hopes that she’ll agree without some encouragement on my part.

Delaney: What time?

Well, that was an unexpected reply. Smiling, I tap the screen with my thumbs.

Me: Come on over. I’m already grilling out.

Delaney: What’s on the menu?

My smile grows wider.

Me: Sirloin strips, burgers, dogs, pasta salad, salad, chips, baked beans, and corn on the cob.

Delaney: That’s all?

A strangled laugh slips free.

Me: There are also chocolate chip cookies and brownies for dessert. But at my house you can have dessert before dinner.

Delaney: How can I resist that?

I pump my fist. Yes.

Ace walks over to me. “What are you so happy about?”

“Delaney’s coming over.”

“Nice. Did you have to plead or grovel to get her to agree?” he asks.

“No, it was surprisingly easy, and now I’m wondering why.”

“It’s probably a good thing. Don’t overthink it.”

“Or she’s trying to deliberately keep me off balance.”

He shakes his head. “I doubt she’s putting that much thought into it.”

I stretch my arms out. “How do I look?” I’m wearing a pair of tan cargo shorts and a green t-shirt with my favorite pair of canvas slip-on shoes and no socks. I put in some extra effort on the off chance Delaney accepted my invitation, and now I’m glad I did.

“I wouldn’t fuck you.”

I punch him in the arm. “Come on, I’m being serious.”

He grins. “So am I.”

I ignore him. “Is my hair okay?” His eyes sweep over the top of my head and he nods. “Anything in the booger catcher?” I ask.

Ace loses it, his deep laughter ringing out. “What the fuck is a booger catcher?”

“It's the inner upper corner of your nostril. It’s like a pocket where boogers get caught and you don’t know it until you finally catch sight of yourself in a mirror. But by that time you could’ve been walking around with one hanging out there all day.” I tip my head back, stretching my lips downward, giving him a clear view up my nostrils. “Are they all clear?”

“Yes. Jesus, the things I do for our friendship.” Ace shakes his head.

“Hey, I feed you all the time, so you have nothing to complain about.”

“Good point.” He tips the neck of the beer bottle in his hands toward me. “Speaking of, when’s the food gonna be ready? I’m fucking starving.”

“There are appetizers on the table. Help yourself.”

“Damn, you’re going all out tonight.”

“Well, we just won our game last night and things are looking up,” I explain.

“Yeah, I’m sure it doesn’t have anything to do with the gorgeous blonde who’s coming over.” Ace knows my true reason.

“Yeah, it’s definitely not that,” I joke.

“Have you given any more thought to what we talked about on the plane ride home?” Ace asks.

“Yeah, but I still don’t have any concrete plans for what I’ll do. Honestly, I’m gonna wing it and see what happens. She’s not predictable at all, so it’s not like have an idea of how she’ll react to a situation before it happens.
